In the Tashkent Region, a lawyer was arrested by the State Security Service (SSS) while accepting a bribe of $10,000 in exchange for promising to alter a court-imposed sentence for a citizen. The arrest occurred during an operational measure conducted by the SSS department for the Tashkent Region, where the lawyer was caught red-handed with material evidence.
According to reports, the lawyer promised a local citizen to change a two-year imprisonment sentence, imposed by judicial authorities, to a restriction of freedom sentence, leveraging his connections within the court system. For this service, he demanded and received $10,000, leading to his detention at the moment of the money transfer, with authorities securing concrete proof of the crime.
Currently, a criminal case has been initiated based on this incident, and investigative actions are underway. SSS representatives emphasized that all legal measures are being applied during the investigation to uncover the full scope of the offense. This case highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption within Uzbekistan's legal framework.
The SSS has called on citizens to report similar legal violations in daily life by calling the hotline number 1520. The anonymity of informants is guaranteed to be protected. This appeal aims to increase public involvement in anti-corruption initiatives, reflecting broader societal challenges in addressing graft.
Previously, a similar incident was recorded in the Samarkand Region, where a deputy governor and a lawyer were arrested for demanding $2,500 to favorably resolve a criminal case involving a suspect. These cases underscore persistent corruption issues and the active role of law enforcement agencies in Uzbekistan, pointing to systemic friction in the justice system.
