Dutch authorities announced the recovery of a priceless ancient golden helmet from Romania, which was stolen last year from a museum in the Netherlands. The 2,500-year-old Coșofenești helmet, considered a cultural icon of Romania, was on loan to the Drents Museum when it was taken over a year ago, sending shock waves through the art world. Under significant pressure from Romania, Dutch investigators intensified efforts to locate the artifact.

At a news conference in the eastern Dutch city of Assen, prosecutors unveiled the helmet under the guard of balaclava-wearing police. Art detective Arthur Brand stated, “It’s amazing. It’s the best news we could have got.” Three men are on trial for the theft but have largely remained silent in court; police worked through contacts to persuade the alleged robbers to hand over the helmet in exchange for a more lenient punishment.

The theft occurred in January 2025, when a gang used firework bombs to break into the museum in the northern Netherlands, smashing display cases and escaping with the golden Coșofenești helmet and three gold bracelets. During the investigation, Dutch police offered to halve the sentence of one suspect if he revealed the helmet’s location, while an undercover officer reportedly offered another suspect €400,000. The Dutch government had set aside €5.7 million for potential payouts after the theft, highlighting the incident’s impact, which made regular headlines and sparked outrage in Romania, where the items are regarded as national treasures.
