Dutch prosecutors in Assen have unveiled the recovered 2,500-year-old Coșofenești golden helmet and two of three golden bracelets, which were stolen from the Drents Museum in January last year. The artifacts were on loan from the Romanian National History Museum in Bucharest. The theft sparked international headlines, diplomatic tensions between Romania and the Netherlands, and a widespread treasure hunt.

Chief public prosecutor Corien Fahner stated the helmet and bracelets were recovered on April 1 as part of a plea deal with suspects. Dutch police arrested three suspects within days of the heist, but they remained largely silent in pre-trial hearings. Authorities had offered to halve one suspect's sentence and reportedly offered another €400,000 to reveal the artifacts' location.

Drents Museum director Robert van Langh emphasized the inestimable historical value of the helmet, noting its depicted eyes meant to protect against the evil eye. He mentioned minor damage to the helmet, repairable in an hour of restoration, while the bracelets are in perfect condition. The third bracelet remains missing.

Romania received €5.7 million in compensation from insurers last September, with agreements to reimburse if artifacts were recovered. Former Romanian museum director Ernest Oberländer-Târnoveanu, fired after the theft, expressed relief and defended his decision to loan the artifact for international exhibition. Romanian prosecutor Rareș Stan confirmed the investigation continues for the final bracelet.

Art expert Bianca Frölich highlighted the artifacts' rarity as witnesses of the Dacian civilization, which existed at a crossroads of ancient Greek, Scythian, and Roman influences. No written records survive from the Dacians, but the helmet's craftsmanship speaks volumes about their culture. The recovery marks a significant moment for cultural heritage preservation amid ongoing legal and diplomatic complexities.
