A joint initiative by Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to enhance the protection of the striped hyena has received international backing at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP15) in Campo Grande, Brazil. This decision led to the inclusion of the striped hyena in Appendices I and II of the Convention, which will strengthen its global conservation and facilitate coordinated measures between countries.
The success of the initiative stems from Uzbekistan's consistent efforts to advocate for the species' protection on the international stage and was recognized as a key outcome of the conference. Additionally, at Uzbekistan's initiative, the striped hyena has been incorporated into the Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI), enabling a shift towards practical implementation of conservation actions.
During CMS COP15, approximately 40 endangered animal species were added to the Convention's Appendices, bolstering their international protection through population monitoring, reduction of key threats, and enhancement of cross-border cooperation. Previously, Uzbekistan solidified its status as a global leader in wildlife conservation by earning the prestigious "Migratory Species Champion Plus" title, reflecting the international community's high appraisal of Tashkent's contributions to preserving rare animals that traverse national borders.
