Customs officers in Samara stopped a microbus traveling from Uzbekistan to the Moscow region via Kazakhstan for inspection. Inside the vehicle, they found cages containing 93 rare parrots, Bahama ducks, and mountain turkeys.
The detained driver explained that he was acting as a courier and was unaware of the details regarding the cargo. Furthermore, he lacked any permits for importing live animals. An administrative case has been initiated against him for failure to declare goods.
The confiscated birds have been transferred to the Ulyanovsk Zoo, where specialists will conduct an examination. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of illegal wildlife trafficking.
Previously, a smuggler with Red Book-listed falcons was detained at the Uzbekistan border. He had hidden the birds in a bag, securing their wings with tape and tying their eyes and legs, in an attempt to illegally export them from the country. These cases underscore the importance of conservation efforts and legal oversight.
