A convict sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the Crocus City Hall terror attack has died by suicide in a Moscow detention center, according to the city's branch of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN). The incident occurred at the "Matrosskaya Tishina" pretrial detention facility (SIZO), a well-known institution in the Russian capital.
Media reports identify the individual as 37-year-old Yakubjoni Yusufzoda. After the suicide attempt, the prisoner was taken to a hospital but could not be saved. This event marks a significant development in the high-profile case following the court's verdict.
There have also been reports of a suicide attempt by another convict in the same case, Jabrail Aushev. His lawyer stated that Aushev had previously made similar attempts, including on the day the sentence was announced. However, the FSIN has denied this information, claiming no such incidents were recorded.
The terror attack at Crocus City Hall took place on March 22, 2024, in Krasnogorsk, near Moscow. Armed assailants opened fire on concertgoers and set the hall ablaze, resulting in the deaths of 150 people. It stands as one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in Russia in recent years.
In March 2026, a court sentenced four direct perpetrators and several alleged accomplices to life imprisonment, with other defendants receiving lengthy prison terms. Yusufzoda was accused of financing the attack, while Aushev faced charges related to supplying weapons and ammunition. These incidents raise concerns about the conditions and security measures within Russian detention facilities, highlighting ongoing challenges in the penal system.
