Former Australian international cricketer David Warner, a 39-year-old sportsman, has been charged with drink-driving after being pulled over by police in Sydney on Sunday, according to reports from local media in his native Australia. Warner, who still plays Twenty20 cricket for franchises worldwide, was allegedly driving a van that stopped short of a random testing site.
The Australian national broadcaster ABC reported on Tuesday that officers approached the vehicle and breath-tested Warner, who returned a positive result. He was subsequently arrested and taken to a local police station, where he was charged with mid-range drink-driving. His court appearance is scheduled for May 7.
In a statement, police outlined the incident but did not name the former Australian opener, who retired from international cricket in 2024 after accumulating 8,786 runs across 112 Test matches. Warner most recently appeared for the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League and has also played in the Indian Premier League for Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The left-handed batsman played his last Test in January 2024 against Pakistan, following a 13-year career at the highest level of the game's longest format, while he made his T20 and one-day international debuts for Australia in January 2009. This incident could negatively impact the athlete's reputation, as drink-driving is considered a serious offense, and it is expected to affect his future cricket career prospects.
