A school shooting at a middle school in Turkey's southern Kahramanmaras province has resulted in the deaths of four people. Provincial Governor Mukerrem Unluer stated on Wednesday that the fatalities included three students and a teacher, with an additional 20 people injured.
The governor reported that the attacker, a student, came to school with firearms believed to belong to his father in his backpack. He entered two classrooms and opened fire randomly, causing injuries and deaths. The attacker was also killed, with reports indicating he took his own life.
Police and ambulances were dispatched to the scene following reports of intense gunfire. Local media identified the location as Ayse Calik Middle School in the Onikisubat district. Unluer noted that the attacker was in eighth grade, making him between 13 and 14 years old.
The boy reportedly arrived at the school carrying five firearms and seven magazines that belonged to his father, a retired police officer. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
Wednesday's shooting occurred just a day after 16 people were injured when a former student opened fire at a high school in the nearby Sanliurfa province, with the shooter then killing himself. The motive for Tuesday's attack remains unclear. School shootings are uncommon in Turkey, and their occurrence in such close succession is particularly notable.
