Turkish authorities have decided to significantly enhance security measures in all schools across the country. According to information from the Hurriyet newspaper, based on a directive from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this decision was made following a series of violent attacks that occurred in recent days.
From now on, at least two police officers will be permanently stationed at every educational institution in Turkey's 81 provinces. Enhanced inspections have been implemented on school grounds, and security measures will be continuously updated based on risk assessments.
On April 14, an attack on a high school in Şanlıurfa province resulted in 16 people being injured. Among them were 10 students, 4 teachers, one police officer, and one cafeteria worker. On April 15, a shooting at a school in Kahramanmaraş city led to 9 fatalities and 13 injuries. The attack was carried out by an 8th-grade student from that school.
Both attackers committed suicide at the scene, and their motives remain unclear at this time. However, police reports indicate that the student from Kahramanmaraş used a social media photo referencing American killer Elliot Rodger, who murdered six college students in Santa Barbara in 2014.
As part of the investigation, law enforcement agencies have detained over 80 individuals on charges of "glorifying crimes and criminals." Access to 940 social media accounts has been blocked, and 93 groups on the Telegram messenger have been shut down. These measures are aimed at ensuring school safety and preventing similar incidents.
