The Uzbekistan Hydrometeorological Service (Uzgidromet) has issued an emergency warning for adverse weather conditions expected from April 18 to 23 in the foothill and mountainous regions of Uzbekistan. Forecasts predict heavy rains that could trigger mudflows and floods, posing a significant threat to communities and infrastructure across nearly all provinces, highlighting the country's vulnerability to natural hazards amid ongoing environmental challenges.
According to Uzgidromet Director Sherzodkhuja Khabibullakhuja, at-risk areas include over 50 districts in the Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya, Samarkand, Navoi, Jizzakh, Tashkent, Namangan, Fergana, and Andijan regions. In some districts, accumulation of rainwater may lead to flooding, potentially damaging agricultural lands and transportation networks, which could exacerbate economic and social strains in these areas.
Experts are urging residents, tourists, and drivers heading to mountainous zones to exercise caution, advising them to avoid hazardous routes, steer clear of water streams, and adhere to local authority guidelines. This warning underscores the increasing risks associated with volatile weather patterns and climate change impacts in the region, which may lead to further disruptions and safety concerns.
