A trial has commenced in Istanbul over the deaths of four members of a German family at a hotel in Turkey last year. The Böcek family, comprising father Servet, mother Cigdem, their 6-year-old son, and 3-year-old daughter, fell violently ill during a vacation and later died in a local hospital.

Investigations revealed that the family members were poisoned by pesticide due to an improperly conducted insect extermination on the hotel's first floor, leading to their fatalities. Six individuals, including the hotel owner and pest control company employees, are charged with causing death through negligence.

The defendants face sentences of up to 22.5 years in prison. The trial in Istanbul has drawn international attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety standards in the tourism sector.

In a separate incident, a case of sabotage involving baby food has been reported in Germany. German manufacturer HiPP stated that the contamination of five jars of carrot and potato puree found in Slovakia, Austria, and Czechia was part of an extortion attempt. Austrian supermarket chain Spar issued an urgent recall after investigators determined the jars were spiked with rat poison.

Authorities advised consumers to listen for the characteristic "pop" sound when opening baby food jars to ensure they had not been tampered with. HiPP and police have not disclosed the alleged extortionist's demands, raising further questions about consumer safety and security protocols.
