Jimmy Lai, founder of Hong Kong's largest pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. His son Sebastien Lai said the award shows that those who fight for the freedom of others 'are never alone.'
Lai arrived in Hong Kong as a 12-year-old stowaway from southern China and later built a media empire. He was arrested in December 2020 under the national security law imposed by Beijing.
In February 2024, the 78-year-old was convicted of 'colluding with foreign forces' and given the heaviest sentence under the law. His legal team said he will not appeal.
DW has awarded Lai its 2025 Freedom of Speech Award. DW Director General Barbara Massing praised his 'indispensable dedication to democratic values' and defense of press freedom.
Sebastien Lai said his father's health is deteriorating, with diabetes, weight loss, and dental issues. He has not seen his father for five years and communicates only by mail.
US President Donald Trump reportedly asked Chinese leader Xi Jinping to 'consider' releasing Lai. Sebastien expressed hope that Trump could intervene to secure his father's release.
