The Israeli Navy has intercepted several vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The organization announced the incident on Thursday, April 30, via its X social media account.

According to the group, communication with the boats has been lost, and one of them sent an SOS distress signal. Some of the seized vessels are reportedly being towed to the Israeli port of Ashdod. The statement also noted that the Israel Defense Forces are maintaining the naval blockade of Gaza.

Dozens of boats carrying activists departed from a port in Sicily on April 26. The organization described this flotilla as the largest ever to attempt reaching the enclave.

Citing the dpa news agency, mission participants aim to challenge the naval blockade imposed by Israel in 2007 with Egyptian support, and deliver humanitarian supplies to the region. The stated goals of the Global Sumud Flotilla also include facilitating the establishment of a permanent humanitarian corridor.
