Starting May 1, Beijing will enforce new regulations banning the sale, rental, and import of drones and their key components. Authorities cite security concerns as the rationale for the measures. Violators face fines of 500 yuan (approximately $73) and possible confiscation of their devices.

Drone owners must register their equipment with the police. All outdoor flights require prior approval. Additionally, users must complete online training and pass an exam on drone operation rules.

Exceptions are made for counter-terrorism and natural disaster response, but only with official authorization.

The restrictions were approved in March, when city officials announced the need to tighten control over drones to address “problems” in low-altitude airspace security.

In 2025, Beijing’s entire airspace was declared a drone-free zone, requiring separate coordination with the aviation regulator for any flights. The new rules are expected to significantly impact China’s large drone market, which has over three million registered drones and hosts major manufacturers.
