The White House believes it is very close to signing a one-page memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran that would end the war and pave the way for more detailed negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, Axios reported citing sources.
According to the outlet's interlocutors, the US expects a response from Iran on key points within 48 hours. They noted that nothing has been finalized yet, but this is the most favorable time to reach an agreement since the war began.
The memorandum consists of 14 points and is being coordinated by US President's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner directly with Iranian officials and through intermediaries.
The current version of the document envisions a ceasefire, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, limits on Iran's nuclear program, and the start of 30-day negotiations on lifting US sanctions. During this period, the US would also lift the blockade of Iranian ports.
Talks could take place in Islamabad or Geneva. If they reach an impasse, the US could resume the blockade or military action.
The US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. Tehran immediately blocked the Strait of Hormuz, through which 15-20% of the world's oil passes. Washington later announced a blockade of Iranian ports. A temporary truce has been in effect since April 8, but both sides regularly accuse each other of violations.
