Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia launched approximately 200 drone strikes in a single night, effectively ending a temporary truce that had lasted nearly three days. He made the announcement on his X account.
According to Zelenskyy, the strikes targeted the Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions, as well as the capital Kyiv. A kindergarten, energy facilities, a railway, and residential buildings were hit. At least one civilian was killed, Ukrainian authorities reported.
The Russian military did not comment on the end of the three-day ceasefire but claimed to have intercepted 27 Ukrainian drones overnight. The temporary peace was allegedly brokered after talks between Zelenskyy, Russia's Vladimir Putin, and US President Donald Trump last week.
The ceasefire coincided with annual celebrations in Moscow marking the anniversary of the end of World War II. Usually featuring a grand military parade, the festivities were significantly scaled back this year as Russia's economy continues to decline amid the stalemate in Ukraine and fuel price hikes purportedly caused by the US regime's war against Iran.
Both sides accused each other of multiple ceasefire violations over the three-day period. Putin recently declared that he believes the war may be drawing to a close, tapping controversial former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder to lead possible peace negotiations.
