Jeff Landry, the US special envoy for Greenland and governor of Louisiana, has arrived in Nuuk, the capital of Denmark's autonomous territory, for a multi-day visit, Deutsche Welle reports.
His trip coincides with preparations for the Future Greenland 2026 economic forum, scheduled for May 19-20, which aims to attract investment and develop international cooperation in the region.
Landry is visiting Greenland for the first time in his new role, having been appointed special envoy in December 2025. During the visit, he will participate in the forum and hold meetings to strengthen ties with local residents and business representatives.
The US embassy in Denmark stated that the goal is to expand economic opportunities and deepen mutual understanding between the US and Greenland, according to AFP. The US delegation, consisting of about seven people, is staying in central Nuuk.
According to Sermitsiaq, the delegation brought boxes of caps with MAGA (“Make America Great Again”) branding. At the airport, vehicles greeted the visitors directly at the plane's stairs. US Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery is expected to arrive in Greenland on May 18.
Landry told Danish TV channel DR that President Donald Trump urged him before the trip to “make as many friends as possible.” US interest in the island has previously been explained by national security concerns.
Politico reported that in January, a draft free association agreement that the US could offer to Greenland's authorities was discussed. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted that negotiations have not yet led to concrete agreements, though some progress has been made.
