The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has categorically denied reports that head coach Pape Thiaw refused to travel to the United States for World Cup preparations. African news outlets had claimed Thiaw was involved in a contract dispute, causing an eight-hour departure delay on Wednesday.

In a statement, the FSF said: "The federation wishes to inform the public of the circumstances surrounding the departure of the national team to the United States, in order to establish the truth in response to erroneous information relayed by certain media and social networks."

The federation labelled the claims as "unfounded rumours" and clarified that the delay was due to logistical issues — flight permits and visas. "Whilst legitimate contractual discussions are ongoing, they have had no impact on the team's travel schedule," the statement added.

Thiaw, 45, became Senegal's head coach in December 2024 and led the Teranga Lions to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title. The final against Morocco was marred by a mid-game boycott over a refereeing decision, with players leaving the field for 14 minutes.

Senegal will compete in Group I of the 2026 World Cup, facing France on June 16, Norway on June 22, and Iraq on June 26. They also have friendlies against the United States and Saudi Arabia scheduled before the tournament.
