The Iranian regime has begun preparations for the mass funeral of the slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which had been delayed for nearly three months due to the war with the US and Israeli regimes.
According to Iranian state television, citing Mohsen Mahmoudi, head of the Tehran Coordination Council for Islamic Propaganda, a special headquarters has been formed, and various state agencies are organizing and planning mourning events. The exact date of the ceremony remains uncertain, but officials claim all necessary conditions have been created and expect “broad participation” of citizens once the date is officially announced.
Ali Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic since 1989, was killed on February 28 in US-Israeli airstrikes that sparked a full-scale war. In the same air attacks, his son and official successor Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded and has not appeared in public since taking office.
Initially planned state funeral could not be held due to intense hostilities. In April, Iran only managed to hold memorial events for the slain leader, coinciding with the entry into force of a ceasefire. Although the truce is generally holding, the parties to the conflict have yet to reach a final settlement agreement.
