Switzerland's first-choice striker Breel Embolo did not travel with the rest of the World Cup squad to the United States after his Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) was placed under further review.
The Swiss Football Federation confirmed that Embolo's ESTA had been approved until 10:30 am local time, when they were notified of the review. The team departed for a training camp in San Diego ahead of their opening Group B match against Qatar on June 13 in San Francisco.
The 24-goal forward in 86 appearances has a legal issue stemming from a 2018 incident in Basel. In 2023, he was convicted of making multiple threats and handed a suspended fine, a verdict upheld on appeal after judges rejected his account.
Swiss media reported in April that Embolo decided not to take the case to the Federal Court, making the judgment final. The federation said it is in contact with authorities and expects Embolo to join the squad later today or tomorrow.
