World number one Aryna Sabalenka's bid for a first French Open title ended in bizarre fashion as she collapsed to a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 loss to Russian 25th seed Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals.
Sabalenka led by a set and a double break before committing 57 unforced errors in blustery conditions on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The Belarusian was the only Grand Slam champion left in the draws but failed to reach the semifinals.
Shnaider, playing in her first major quarterfinal, will face Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the semifinals. The 22-year-old Russian said: "Honestly, I'm speechless, I'm super happy. Tough conditions with the wind."
Sabalenka's defeat was reminiscent of her collapse in last year's final against Coco Gauff. She failed to become the first woman to reach seven straight major semifinals since Serena Williams.
The top seed won just 14 points in the deciding set as Shnaider cruised to victory, securing a semifinal berth when Sabalenka hit a routine backhand into the net on match point.
