At least 12 people were wounded in a shooting near the Old West End Festival in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday evening, police said. Two victims are in critical condition, according to Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan.
Authorities said at least two people opened fire, allegedly shooting at each other. The suspects remain at large, and an active search is underway.
The Toledo Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at 5:37 pm local time. Officers found multiple victims, who were taken to nearby hospitals.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed deep concern over the violence, stating that summer festivals "should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear of violence."
The annual Old West End Festival is a two-day event featuring live music, food vendors, and home tours. George Kral, Toledo's director of public safety, said several hundred people were present.
Thousands of people die from gunshot wounds annually in the US. The Gun Violence Archive has recorded 172 mass shootings so far this year.
