A team from the Second Hospital of Guangxi Medical University in China performed a groundbreaking surgery, transplanting two kidneys and a liver from a genetically modified pig into a 53-year-old brain-dead patient.

The transplanted organs functioned for nearly five days before the experiment was terminated at the family's request. This marks the first time in history that multiple pig organs have been transplanted into a human simultaneously.

Such operations fall under xenotransplantation — the transfer of organs or tissues between different species. While still experimental, scientists believe this technology could eventually help address the critical shortage of donor organs.

Previously, an Australian man reportedly lived a record 100 days with an artificial heart before receiving a donor organ transplant.
