The Czech Republic and South Africa played out a 1-1 draw in their second Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The Czechs took an early lead in the 6th minute through Michal Sadilek. South Africa struggled to get back into the game but were handed a lifeline in the 83rd minute when they were awarded a penalty. Teboho Mokoena stepped up and converted, saving his side from a second consecutive defeat.

The match took place in Atlanta. Both teams earned their first point of the tournament. In the opening round, the Czech Republic lost to South Korea, while South Africa fell to Mexico.

After two matches, both the Czech Republic and South Africa still have a chance to advance, though their situation remains precarious. Under the new World Cup format, not only the top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout stage, but also the eight best third-placed teams.

In the final round, the Czech Republic will face Mexico, while South Africa will take on South Korea. Both teams now need a win to realistically hope for further progress in the tournament.
