Canada midfielder Ismael Kone underwent successful surgery to repair severe fractures in his lower left leg sustained during Thursday's 6-0 win over Qatar.

Canada Soccer confirmed the surgery in Vancouver, stating Kone is expected to make a full recovery but will miss the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The injury occurred in the 51st minute of the Group B match when Qatar's Assim Madibo attempted a tackle, catching Kone's leg. Medical staff immediately attended to Kone, who was visibly in pain before being stretchered off.

While on the stretcher, Kone gave a thumbs-up to fans while receiving oxygen. Canada coach Jesse Marsch said he heard the bone snap and later visited Kone in hospital, noting the player was in good spirits.

The surgery lasted about 90 minutes with three surgeons. Marsch praised the medical team's quick response, saying the surgeons had seen the incident on TV and prepared immediately.

A video review resulted in a red card for Madibo, who later apologized. Canada faces Switzerland on Wednesday, with both teams on four points in Group B.
