The United States is effectively halting the admission of asylum seekers based on two Supreme Court rulings, according to White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.

“America’s doors are completely closed to asylum seekers,” Miller told reporters. He claimed that US officials have developed a “simple and reasonable solution” for those seeking refuge. “If you apply for asylum, we will find you another country in the world that will accept you,” he explained.

Miller was commenting on two Supreme Court decisions on immigration matters, both handed down the previous day in favor of the Trump administration.

The deputy chief of staff reiterated his support for tightening control on the US-Mexico border, asserting that “all asylum claims on the southwestern border always turn out to be false,” as reported by USA Today.

According to The Washington Post, the rulings allow the Trump team to overhaul the system for granting asylum and deporting immigrants from countries affected by wars and natural disasters.

The first ruling permits the Trump administration to terminate humanitarian protections for refugees from Haiti (350,000 people) and Syria (over 6,000), many of whom have lived and worked in the US for years. The decision could also put all 1.3 million people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) at risk of deportation.

Most of them had already lost the right to protection from deportation but had appealed the decision. The Supreme Court ruling could now affect the outcome of those cases, The Washington Post notes.

The second ruling allows authorities to reinstate a previous immigration policy at the Mexican border, which enables border agents to limit the number of individuals who can file asylum claims in a single day.
