Seattle, United States – The FIFA World Cup match between Egypt and Iran ended in a 1-1 draw, featuring goals, celebrations, heartbreak, and political protests. Palestinian flags were waved, and confrontations occurred outside the stadium.

Egyptian fans erupted in wild celebrations after the match, as their team advanced past the group stage for the first time. Daniel Salib, draped in an Egyptian flag, told Al Jazeera: “The feeling is outstanding. We absolutely deserve it.”

Iranian supporter Saeed Nassef expressed disappointment but praised his team: “The Iranian team did a beautiful job. They faced a lot of hardship, but we’re really happy how they played.”

Protesters against the Iranian regime gathered outside the stadium, waving US and Israeli flags and holding photos of opposition figure Reza Pahlavi. Iranian fans reported harassment from activists.

After the match, a confrontation broke out between anti-government activists and an Iranian flag carrier. The protesters hurled insults, calling him a “terrorist” and using Islamophobic slurs. Police intervened to separate them.

Inside the stadium, the atmosphere was electric. Fans of both teams took pictures together, and players consoled each other. Chants of “Iran, Iran” and “Misr, Misr” alternated throughout the match.

Some spectators waved LGBTQ+ pride flags, as the game was designated the World Cup’s “Pride Match,” but no issues arose.

Egyptian fans donned pharaoh headdresses. Karim Elshabini said: “We’re so proud to be Egyptian. Everybody’s vibing really well.”

Numerous Palestinian flags were displayed. Egyptian fan Bilal Ali told Al Jazeera: “I cannot remain silent with Israeli atrocities continuing in Gaza.” Iranian fan Hameed wore a shirt reading “Minab 168” to honor victims of a school bombing.

Ultimately, Egypt achieved a historic milestone. Rafael Youssef remarked: “Seeing your country finally putting in good effort and getting results is a surreal feeling.”
