Manuel Adorni, the cabinet chief and close ally of Argentine President Javier Milei, resigned on Saturday, February 15, amid a corruption scandal that has undermined the government's pledge to root out graft.
In his resignation letter posted on social media, Adorni wrote: "For the first time since December 10, 2023, I am going against your wishes." He thanked Milei for trusting and supporting him, calling the process "unjust, painful and exhausting" for his family.
The 46-year-old is embroiled in a scandal over his lavish lifestyle, including expensive family holidays and property purchases far exceeding his official earnings. Two weeks ago, he admitted to hiding $500,000 from tax authorities, but claims the money was saved before entering public service.
Adorni became the face of Milei's anti-corruption drive in 2023. Now, the corruption allegations have dealt a blow to the libertarian president's campaign. Investigators are probing illicit enrichment, similar to the excesses Milei and Adorni regularly criticized in left-leaning populist opposition.
Milei has extended unwavering support for Adorni. During a visit to Spain, he told local media: "Manuel is innocent. I stand by my ministers to the bitter end."
