English football club Manchester City has officially announced the appointment of 46-year-old Italian specialist Enzo Maresca as the team's head coach. The contract runs until the summer of 2029.
Maresca replaces Spaniard Pep Guardiola, who had been in charge since 2016. Under Guardiola's leadership, Manchester City won 20 trophies, including six English Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League victory.
Following his appointment, Maresca stated that he looks forward to working with the players, aiming to win, play good football, and enjoy performing for the club.
Notably, the Italian is already familiar with the team: during the 2022/23 season, he worked in Guardiola's coaching staff at Manchester City. He then took over Leicester City, successfully leading them from the Championship to the Premier League. His most recent role was at London's Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Earlier, he managed Italian club Parma and served on the coaching staffs of Ascoli, Sevilla, and West Ham.
Maresca's move to Manchester City was delayed due to Chelsea's demand for a compensation fee of £17 million (approximately $22 million). The Italian's contract with the London club ran until 2029, but he left the team in January. Amid the appointment, Chelsea took the unusual step of issuing a special statement, explaining that Maresca had informed the London management during the season about the possibility of replacing Pep Guardiola at the end of the football year.
