In September 2025, following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, his critics faced firings, threats, and shattered lives. Gerald Bourguet, a professional basketball writer, was fired for posts calling Kirk an "evil man." His family fled the state for safety.

Kirk's killing intensified polarization in the US. Vice-President JD Vance and other conservative leaders urged employers to fire critics. According to a Reuters tally, over 600 people were fired or disciplined. The actual number is likely higher.

Some employers, including Delta Air Lines, Office Depot, and universities, fired employees for negative comments about Kirk. However, many lawsuits followed, and some victims received substantial settlements. For example, Brittney Brown received $485,000, and Tamar Shirinian received $1.9 million.

Yet for most, justice was not served. Bourguet, as an at-will private sector employee, is unlikely to win a lawsuit. He started a podcast but admitted his life is forever changed.

The victims do not regret their words. "I have a right to say what I want to say," Brown said. Shirinian said, "I don't regret the sentiment, I am not sad and I refuse to be made to feel like I have to be sad." Bourguet also does not regret his comments but regrets the impact on his family.
