France striker Kylian Mbappe and the country's football federation have condemned a racist attack by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla following Paraguay's elimination from the World Cup.

The French Football Federation (FFF) said on Monday it will file a report with the prosecutor's office for judicial action against Amarilla, shortly after Mbappe responded to the senator's outburst on social media.

Mbappe, who leads France as captain and top scorer, described Amarilla as a "despicable woman," while the FFF called her tirade "utterly abhorrent and unacceptable."

The 27-year-old's penalty proved decisive in a tense match as France won 1-0 in Philadelphia on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Amarilla wrote a long, racist tirade on X, calling Mbappe a "colonised Cameroonian desperately trying to pass himself off as French" and a "brute" who had not learned to write. She added that Paraguay's players should have slapped him after the match.

Mbappe responded with a strong statement defending himself and the Paraguay players: "Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay. Through your recklessness and brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the historic effort of your players."

The FFF said it backs Mbappe and all victims of such remarks, calling them "criminal and reprehensible." The federation emphasized that the players represent France and the country is being insulted.

France face Morocco in the first quarterfinal in Boston on Thursday. Les Bleus last won the title in 2018 and were runners-up to Argentina in 2022.
