Authorities in Ohio are investigating a fatal accident involving a 42-year-old Uzbek national, Behzod Asrarov, who entered the US via the Diversity Visa lottery program. According to Fox News, Asrarov was driving a truck on Interstate 71 in Madison County when he collided with a car, killing 21-year-old Tobias Forsythe, a goalkeeper for the University of Massachusetts Lowell soccer team.
Citing court documents, reports claim that after police arrived, Asrarov allegedly tried to tear down a dashcam and destroy three mobile phones and a data recording device. He reportedly used Google Translate to communicate with officers, as he does not speak English.
Asrarov held a commercial driver’s license (CDL) issued in Ohio. Authorities are now reviewing how he obtained the license and whether all requirements were met.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy commented on the crash, stating that drivers who cannot read road signs or communicate with law enforcement should not be allowed to operate trucks.
The University of Massachusetts called Forsythe’s death a profound loss. Athletic director Lynn Coutts said the young goalkeeper left a significant mark and will forever be remembered as a beloved team member.
The investigation is ongoing. Earlier, it was reported that Uzbek citizens would gain opportunities for legal employment on US farms under a joint program between the Migration Agency and USA Farm Labor.
