German automaker Volkswagen is facing employee protests over proposals for a massive restructuring. According to The Guardian, the plan could affect up to four plants in Germany and lead to major job cuts.

The restructuring plan, drawn up by the team of Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume, was presented to the supervisory board for the first time on Thursday.

Demonstrations organized by the powerful IG Metall union affected the company's headquarters, Audi and Porsche plants, as well as truck and bus manufacturer MAN.

German sites in Hanover, Emden, Zwickau and the Audi plant in Neckarsulm are at risk of closure. This is expected to trigger strong resistance from unions and local politicians, including strikes.

In June, Germany and Uzbekistan agreed to assemble Volkswagen cars in Tashkent as part of strengthening bilateral cooperation and increasing German investments to $2 billion.
