Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine in the holy city of Mashhad, concluding six days of public mourning across five Iranian cities and neighboring Iraq, state news agency IRNA reported.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 in an Israeli strike on his Tehran residence, along with several family members. His son Mojtaba, reportedly seriously wounded in the same attack, did not attend the burial and has not been seen in public since.
Thousands of mourners, dressed in black, waved Iranian flags and red banners symbolizing vengeance, chanting slogans such as "We must rise." Some held placards calling for the death of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"The loss of the leader is heavier than losing our parents," Hoda, a 35-year-old housewife, told AFP. "Only the death of Trump and Netanyahu will soothe our pain."
The burial was overshadowed by renewed hostilities between Iran and the US. Trump warned of "much worse" strikes after a second night of US attacks targeting Iran's ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed to have struck US military facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar in retaliation.
Three weeks ago, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding calling for a ceasefire, but Trump declared it "over" on Wednesday. Next talks were planned after Khamenei's funeral ceremonies.
