A large-scale 25-year study in Denmark, covering data from three million women, has found that hormonal contraceptives may increase the risk of developing meningioma, the most common type of brain tumor.

The research revealed that certain types of birth control pills, injections, and intrauterine devices significantly raise the likelihood of meningioma. The highest risk was observed with one year of use, and longer-term use further amplified the danger.

Contraceptive injections posed the greatest risk, while high-dose pills and hormonal IUDs also showed a notable increase in threat.

Although meningioma is benign in about 90% of cases, it can be dangerous: as it grows, it presses on brain tissue, causing seizures, memory loss, neurological disorders, and requiring complex surgery.

However, the elevated risk is temporary — approximately five years after discontinuing hormonal contraception, the risk returns to natural levels. The authors emphasize that these findings should serve as a crucial warning for gynecologists and women to carefully consider the composition and dosage of contraceptives when choosing family planning methods.
