Air defense systems in Gulf states and Jordan shot down Iranian missiles and drones following a night of US airstrikes on Iran. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain issued warnings to residents on Saturday night and Sunday morning about incoming projectiles.
Kuwait reported that its military responded to attacks on its territory early Sunday. In Qatar, the Interior Ministry said three people, including a child, were injured by falling shrapnel after attack warnings were sent to residents. Three Iranian missiles landed in Jordan without causing casualties, authorities said.
Air defenses in the UAE were activated after reports of incoming Iranian missiles and drones. Warning sirens sounded three times in Bahrain on Sunday morning. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it targeted a US radar site in Kuwait and destroyed a command-and-control center and drone hangars at a military base in Jordan used by US forces.
Iran also claimed to have destroyed a fighter jet maintenance facility in Qatar at a base used by the US, though Qatar stated all projectiles were intercepted. A US aircraft carrier support platform in the Omani port of Duqm was also allegedly targeted. Oman's state news agency reported that the Musandam enclave was hit by drones on Sunday.
US forces struck about 140 military targets in Iran early Sunday, according to CENTCOM. The third night of strikes followed Iran's attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported a container ship was attacked off Oman, with the crew rescued by local authorities.
CENTCOM said the IRGC attacked the M/V GFS Galaxy, causing a fire and significant engine room damage. The crew had to abandon the 300-meter-long vessel in a lifeboat. India's Ministry of External Affairs said 11 Indian citizens were on board; 10 were rescued and one is missing.
Iran announced it has closed the Strait of Hormuz again after it was partially reopened following a memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington aimed at ending the war in mid-June. Iran claimed the targeted container ship was using an unauthorized route. The strait remains a key sticking point between the US and Iran after the US and Israel started a war on Iran in February.
