The World Cup quarterfinals have concluded, and for the first time since 1990, four former champions—Argentina, England, France, and Spain—have advanced to the semifinals. They capitalized on the inexperience of lesser-pedigreed opponents.

France defeated Morocco. Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi fielded a lineup without any forwards, a strategy that predictably failed. France coach Didier Deschamps expressed surprise: “I was quite surprised by the starting 11. I tried to understand why he made these choices—no real forwards.” Kylian Mbappé's goal opened the scoring, and France won 2-0.

Spain beat Belgium. 19-year-old Pau Cubarsí held his own in defense. His long-range shot led to a rebound that Mikel Merino converted in the 88th minute. Spain won 2-1.

England narrowly overcame Norway. Norway coach Ståle Solbakken's strategy initially worked, but in the quarterfinals, his team showed inexperience. Erling Haaland's goal was disallowed after VAR, and England won 2-1.

Argentina defeated Switzerland after Breel Embolo was sent off for simulation. Alexis Mac Allister's header from Lionel Messi's corner gave Argentina a 1-0 win.
