The Lithuanian Seimas has adopted amendments to legislation expanding the list of individuals whom state authorities may require to undergo polygraph testing.

According to the new norms, foreign nationals are now included in this list, reports Lithuanian outlet LRT. Lie detector tests may be administered to foreigners applying for or renewing residence permits in Lithuania.

The procedure will only be initiated when the migration department has reasonable suspicions that a specific person may pose a threat to national security. The law clearly stipulates the consequence of refusal: if a foreigner officially declines the offer to take a polygraph test, they will be automatically deemed a threat to the country's security.

In addition to foreign citizens, the new legislative norms expand the grounds for polygraph testing of officials within Lithuania itself. According to the authors of these amendments, the key goal is to strengthen national security measures.

These steps are being taken by the authorities considering the current geopolitical situation, the intensified activities of intelligence services of hostile states, and the growing number of recorded recruitment cases. According to some data, over 10,000 Uzbek citizens currently reside in Lithuania.
