Hamish Tait, a 35-year-old childcare worker from Sydney, has been charged with 329 offences involving the alleged abuse of 136 children across five daycare centres over a 16-year period. The charges include 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming a person engaged in a private act without consent.
Tait was first arrested in July 2023, but his identity was only revealed on Monday, October 14, 2024, after a court order was lifted to allow police to contact victims' families. Authorities have notified 121 families, but 22 victims remain unidentified.
Between 2009 and 2025, Tait worked at or attended 62 early childhood education facilities in Sydney, primarily in the city's north-west. The alleged offences occurred at four childcare centres and his own private business. Police have launched a website to support affected families.
Australian Federal Police Acting Commander Luke Needham stated: "Any form of child sexual abuse is confronting and horrific, even more so when the alleged perpetrator is an individual trusted with the care of our youth." The case has sparked widespread concern among Australian parents, following a series of similar scandals in recent years.
In 2024, Ashley Paul Griffith confessed to 307 offences committed in Queensland and overseas over 20 years. Last year, Joshua Dale Brown was charged with dozens of child abuse offences at four centres in Victoria. These incidents have eroded public trust in childcare institutions.
