The Trump administration on Tuesday announced a ban on new foreign-made humanoid robot imports to the US over 'unacceptable risks' to national security. The move targets advanced robots, including humanoid and four-legged machines, many of which are produced in China.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also banned imports of power inverters used in data centers and solar panels. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the agency was doing its part 'to secure America's critical supply chains.'

The ban applies to new foreign-produced advanced robotic devices and power inverters, but does not affect existing models previously authorized by the FCC.

The FCC cited concerns that foreign-made inverters could allow overseas firms to disable them, steal data, or enable surveillance by 'foreign government actors.' Similarly, foreign-made robots could be used to 'surveil Americans' or be remotely commandeered.

China's exports have faced intense US scrutiny as the Trump administration addresses trade imbalances. Despite being the world's largest EV exporter, China is effectively shut out of the US market by a 100% tariff. In response, China claims its AI development is 'the result of its own dedication and international cooperation.'
