The real cost of the US military operation against Iran has significantly exceeded the Pentagon's official estimates. According to calculations by The Telegraph, Washington's expenses for the five-month Operation Epic Fury reached $151.3 billion, roughly four times the $37.5 billion claimed by the US Department of Defense.
If the conflict continues at the current pace, total expenditures could rise to $311.3 billion by the end of the year. Harvard University experts suggest that when long-term consequences, including servicing the national debt, are factored in, the final cost could approach $1 trillion.
The discrepancy between official and independent estimates is explained by different calculation methods. The Pentagon primarily accounts for direct budget expenditures on the operation, while economists include additional costs—market impacts, economic consequences, and future financial obligations.
During the hostilities, at least 20 US military facilities in the region, including missile defense systems in the UAE and Jordan, were damaged. Officially, 18 US service members have been reported killed.
The conflict has also impacted energy markets. Against the backdrop of tensions, oil prices periodically exceeded $100 per barrel. In the US, gasoline and diesel prices rose by 21.7% and 36.7%, respectively, compared to previously forecast levels.
Additional pressure is placed on the US budget amid rising national debt, which has reached about 100% of GDP. According to analysts, approximately 15% of federal spending is already directed toward servicing interest on the debt.
Experts note that the protracted conflict and rising energy prices could increase economic pressure on the US administration ahead of the November congressional elections. Furthermore, the reallocation of military and financial resources to the Middle East may affect Washington's attention to other strategic directions, including the Indo-Pacific region.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington could strike the underground 'Pickaxe' facility if negotiations with Iran fail. Despite ongoing dialogue, the American side has warned of readiness for new strikes if Tehran, according to Washington's version, does not comply with the agreements reached.
