US First Lady Melania Trump will chair a UN Security Council meeting on March 2. This coincides with the start of the US's month-long presidency of the body, the US mission to the UN reported on social media platform X.
"The First Lady will make history at the UN: she will take the US presidency of the Security Council to highlight the role of education in promoting peace," the message stated.
This marks the first historical instance involving the spouse of a sitting US president chairing the Council. The meeting will focus on education, technology, peace, and security issues.
"To our knowledge, I can confirm that this will be the first time a first lady chairs a Security Council meeting," said UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.
He noted that previously, spouses of heads of state have participated in meetings as invited guests without being Council members.
