A ninth-grade student opened fire at the elite Thepsirin School in Nonthaburi province, Thailand, on August 7, killing nine people, including himself, and injuring 15 others. The incident occurred around 10:00 AM local time.

According to police, the 14-year-old shooter first killed his grandparents at home before arriving at the school and starting the attack. The motive remains unclear.

Inside the school, three teachers and three students were killed. Thailand's Health Minister Pattana Promphat stated that the death toll among educators might be higher, with up to five teachers possibly among the deceased.

Preliminary reports indicate the teenager used a 9mm pistol belonging to his grandfather, who was also a teacher. Authorities are investigating how the weapon came into the student's possession and what triggered the rampage.

Witnesses said they initially mistook the gunfire for firecrackers or explosions. One student told Reuters that it became clear only later that a shooting was underway.

A seventh-grade girl recounted seeing the armed student moving through the building. She said he shot a teacher at the entrance to a classroom before she managed to escape.

After the attack, the shooter died. Emergency services evacuated students and staff. Two of the 15 injured are in critical condition. Nearby schools, including a kindergarten, suspended classes temporarily.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed condolences to the victims' families, calling the incident a tragedy that should never have happened.

This incident follows a similar shooting in Turkey, where a teenager opened fire in a school in Siverek, Sanliurfa province, and barricaded himself inside with students as hostages.
