Two people have been killed in a 'domestic violence incident' at a school in Gosen-Neu Zittau, near Berlin, according to local police. Brandenburg state police arrested a 19-year-old German man, described as the 'prime suspect'. Authorities said it was not a 'mass shooting' but did not specify the weapon used.

The victims were an 18-year-old female student and a 30-year-old man who died while trying to intervene, local media reported. The suspect is believed to be the ex-boyfriend of the 18-year-old victim, according to Maz Online. Ulrike Liedtke, speaker of Brandenburg's regional parliament, called the incident a 'cowardly femicide'.

'The fact that we once again had to witness deadly violence against a woman fills me with deep sorrow and anger. I am shaken that a citizen who showed moral courage and wanted to help also lost his life in this terrible act,' Liedtke said. State premier Dietmar Woidke described it as an 'unimaginable act of violence'.

The school's managing director, Michael Kunz, said classes would be cancelled on Friday, but the school would remain open for students who wished to come. 'We want to provide them with a safe space where they can come together, talk to each other, and process what has happened,' he said. A 'very careful' decision on future school life will be made in the coming days.

This incident follows a separate attack last month in southern Germany, where two girls were seriously wounded and a 16-year-old suspect was arrested. The recurrence of such violence has raised concerns about safety in German schools.
