American teenager Iva Jovic, 18, advanced to the fourth round of the US Open after a grueling three-set victory over her friend and fellow rising star Alex Eala of the Philippines. The match, which lasted three hours and three minutes, ended 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in Jovic's favor.
"That felt like a marathon, and I felt like I lost my sanity five times over to win that match," Jovic said. "But it's really worth it for this feeling." The contest, held on Arthur Ashe Stadium, featured 17 service breaks in 33 games, showcasing the intensity and high level of play from both athletes.
The most emotional moment came after the match concluded. Instead of waiting at the net as is customary, Eala walked around the court to congratulate her opponent. When asked about this gesture, Jovic was moved to tears: "It says a lot about her as a person. To be able to do that after that type of match and still come over to hug me and wish me all the best — that just shows how incredible she is."
Jovic and Eala are familiar rivals, having faced each other earlier this season at the French Open and Queen's Club, and they have also partnered in doubles. Their mutual understanding contributed to a seesaw battle, with Jovic breaking four times to take the first set, but Eala responding by breaking three times to claim the second. In the deciding set, Jovic won five of the last six games to seal the victory.
"I'm usually not one that shows that many emotions, but this one really meant a lot to me," Jovic said. "It's everything to have another match here at the US Open." She will next face compatriot Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open and 2025 French Open champion, in what promises to be a challenging encounter.
Eala, 21, who won her first WTA title in Washington earlier this year, acknowledged her disappointment but remained positive: "I had my chances. I'm happy with the match in general. I left everything out there. I fought through the ups and downs, and I know for a fact that I fought."
Jovic praised her opponent's performance, saying, "She played an outrageous level tonight. She's playing some of the best tennis in the world right now, so it's no doubt it takes a hell of an effort to beat her." The American, who won her first WTA title in Guadalajara last year, will look to carry this fighting spirit into her next match.
