US leader Donald Trump, speaking at a party convention in Dallas, promised to pay $5,000 to every adult US citizen if the Republican Party retains its majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate following the midterm elections in November.
The payment, dubbed the "Trump dividend," comes with a mandatory condition: the funds must be spent exclusively within the country. According to experts, implementing this initiative will cost the US budget $1 trillion, further increasing the national debt, which already exceeds $40 trillion.
Vice President JD Vance explained that the program is planned to be financed through customs duty revenues. However, economists criticize the proposal, pointing to risks of further inflation growth.
During his speech, Trump also urged support for Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton and promised to actively participate in the Republican election campaign. A notable event of the convention was the virtual speech by Democratic Senator John Fetterman, who supported his Republican colleague Dave McCormick while assuring that he remains loyal to the Democratic Party.
Recall that Trump previously proposed renaming the state of New Mexico to "New America," posting a map on social media with the word "Mexico" crossed out. The initiative sparked a sharp reaction from local politicians, who stated that the state's name is not up for discussion.
