Tashkent, Podrobno.uz — NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, speaking at a conference of heads of German diplomatic missions, said that in the event of Chinese military action against Taiwan, Russia could destabilize the situation in Europe. According to him, such a scenario is aimed at diverting the attention of Western countries and requires the alliance to be ready to act simultaneously in two strategic directions.
Rutte pointed out that threats from Russia in the Euro-Atlantic region and a potential conflict in the Indo-Pacific region are closely interconnected. If Beijing takes steps regarding Taiwan, it could use the Russian leadership to create tension in Europe in order to divert US and European resources. The head of the alliance warned about this.
The NATO chief also noted that Washington is forced to distribute military resources among several strategic zones, including Europe, the Western Hemisphere, and the Pacific Ocean. In this regard, European countries need to take more responsibility for their own security and strengthen their defense potential to fill possible gaps when American forces are redirected. This is especially important as US attention increasingly shifts to the Asia-Pacific region.
Rutte also clarified that a possible strengthening of NATO's interaction with partners in the Indo-Pacific region, such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, does not mean extending collective defense guarantees to Taiwan. The alliance continues to view Russia as a long-term key threat, while also taking into account the growing cooperation between Moscow, Beijing, Pyongyang, and Tehran when planning its security. This indicates the increasing complexity of the global security architecture.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed creating a European Security Council with the participation of EU leaders and partner states. She put forward this initiative during her annual address to the European Parliament. This proposal reflects Europe's desire to strengthen its own security, but its implementation remains uncertain.
