Democratic lawmakers have condemned the US strikes on Iran as a "dangerous" and "unnecessary" escalation, urging the Senate to immediately vote on legislation that would block the president's ability to take further military action without congressional approval.
Senator Tim Kaine, author of the war powers resolution, called President Donald Trump's order to attack Iran a "colossal mistake" and demanded the Senate return to session to vote on his resolution.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed Kaine, pledging House Democrats would push for a floor vote to restrict Trump's war powers regarding Iran.
The push for a legislative check on Trump's executive power has gained bipartisan momentum in the Senate. Senator Mark Warner described the strikes as "a deeply consequential decision that risks pulling the United States into another broad conflict in the Middle East".
Republican Representative Thomas Massie called the strikes "acts of war unauthorised by Congress", while Senator Rand Paul stated, "My oath of office is to the Constitution, so I must oppose another Presidential war".
