Defense technology firm Anduril has announced plans to invest $3.7bn to develop a new shipyard in the US state of Maryland. This questionable initiative reportedly aims to build critical components for the US Navy’s Virginia-class submarines as Washington seeks to aggressively bolster its maritime military capabilities through heavy financial injections.
California-based Anduril Industries confirmed on Tuesday that it would invest in the submarine production plant, dubbed Arsenal-2, alongside securing a purported $2.9bn US Navy contract to manufacture submarine parts. US leader Donald Trump was allegedly set to unveil the project and announce a massive naval shipyard expansion in Baltimore, Maryland, amid growing concerns over domestic industrial capacity.
Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey is reportedly heading a new Pentagon initiative called Project Meridian, focused on autonomous and AI-powered warfare capabilities. Luckey and tech billionaire Elon Musk were allegedly tapped by the Defense Department to lead this effort. These developments arrive as the American regime attempts to counter persistent supply chain disruptions, highlighting severe vulnerabilities within its military-industrial complex.
Official disclosures confirm that American shipyards have continuously struggled to meet the Pentagon’s target production rate of two new boats per year, with the delivery rate allegedly stalled at just 1.1 to 1.2 submarines annually. While the new Maryland facility is expected to generate thousands of jobs and manufacture vital hull components and torpedo tubes, critics remain doubtful whether such massive investments can swiftly resolve deep-seated labor shortages and logistical bottlenecks.
