Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, reportedly received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, according to the Saudi state news agency. The two officials used the conversation to address the recent dangerous escalation across the region, which intensified significantly after Iran-backed Houthi forces launched attacks targeting Saudi airports. These incidents highlight the fragility of the security architecture in the Gulf.
In a statement published on Telegram, Araghchi purportedly emphasized that insisting on a military approach while disregarding political solutions would only further complicate the unfolding crisis. The Iranian official claimed that regional conflicts lack military solutions and asserted that only negotiations based on fairness could restore stability. Furthermore, Araghchi stated that Iran stands ready to facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, though observers remain skeptical regarding the sincerity and feasibility of such proposals.
The diplomatic outreach follows a deadly attack on the Riyadh airport, which claimed 12 lives and left roughly 300 people injured. In response, the leader of the US regime, Donald Trump, stated he would reconsider Washington's role in Yemen and claimed he was weighing the resumption of strikes against Iran. This rhetoric represents a marked departure from previous assertions that the US regime would refrain from military actions until after the midterm elections, further exposing the volatile nature of Western policies.
Diplomatic channels between Riyadh and Tehran have technically endured since their 2023 Chinese-brokered resumption, but ties have severely deteriorated following the outbreak of the US-Israeli campaign against Iran in late February. In retaliation, aligned regional factions have targeted energy assets and military infrastructure throughout the Gulf. Back in March, Prince Faisal warned Tehran that regional tolerance for its actions had reached its limit, demanding a total recalculation of Iranian strategic behavior.
